Adrenaline ultimately controls our thoughts on horror movies
What is adrenaline?
Adrenaline is a hormone that is produced from the adrenal glands above your kidneys, seen in the photo to the left, when the brain tells the body it is scared or in danger. Adrenaline can help the body in many types of ways, like help with decision making when you are in danger, or kill the pain of an injury. One of the best known ways adrenaline aids you is when you are watching a horror movie. The adrenaline starts pumping through your body, and you feel like you can do anything, just because your brain thought you were in actual danger. This is some of the reason as to why a lot of people love horror movies. |
Why is adrenaline produced during a horror movie?
Adrenaline is pumped out of the adrenal glands during a horror movie because the brain thinks that you are in some kind of trouble because of the monster killer that you are watching. To deal with that trouble, the brain needs to make good decisions for survival, so it tells the body to start making adrenaline to help with anything it will need. This reaction between the brain and the adrenal glands can also spark up the famous "fight or flight" reaction that helped ancient humans survive in the wild world back then, but I will get to that. Adrenaline is also produced to get the body ready in case you get injured or you need to fight, and it does this by increasing heart rate and slightly increasing the capacity of your lungs. This helps on the chance that you want to run away from your fight.

How can adrenaline help during a movie?
Adrenaline can help you have a good time! Adrenaline is known to intensify feelings. So, if you loved the movie you were watching, the pending adrenaline rush will help you have a great mood and better your day because of it. On the other side of the spectrum, if you hated the movie, the adrenaline rush that you get can have negatives effects on how you feel for the rest of the day. This is another reason of how adrenaline plays a big part in the way people react so differently to horror movies. Other than that, adrenaline can also help with dealing with emotions you had at the time. Horror movies seem like a good way to purge your bad feelings and attitude by watching someone else's problems be the end of their days on Earth. It sounds morbid, but many scholars and doctors agree it is a pretty healthy way to channel your emotions. This method and psychological tendency was named by the famous philosopher, Aristotle, who thought that it is the reason why we all love monster stories. The way the body does this is that it has an adrenaline rush during the movie, which clears the brain of all thought process beforehand to better fix the problem at hand right now. Therefore, you feel relieved after the movie is over because you have forgotten about your problems for two hours.
